Alghero-Fertilia "Riviera del Corallo" Airport: A Natural Treasure

Alghero Airport

The airport was first opened in 1938 as a military airport and was given its first real runway, 700 metres long, during the Second World War. This was later extended to its current length of 3,000 metres.

In 1971, the first passenger terminal was opened, subsequently undergoing expansion and radical improvement over the years to follow. The most recent work, completed in 2023, included the opening of a new, modern arrivals hall and baggage reclaim area.

● SOGEAAL

Società di Gestione dell’Aeroporto di Alghero (Alghero Airport Management Company) was created in 1994 following the adoption of regulations liberalising airport operations and aeronautical services. Since then, it has continued to manage the airport, with approximately 1.5 million passengers passing through it in 2023.

The airport is just a few kilometres from the main towns in northern Sardinia: 10 kilometres from Alghero, 33 kilometres from the provincial capital Sassari, 34 kilometres from Porto Torres, 35 kilometres from Stintino, 54 kilometres from Bosa, 65 kilometres from Castelsardo, 128 kilometres from Santa Teresa di Gallura and 130 kilometres from Olbia.

● THE LOCAL AREA

Alghero-Fertilia “Riviera del Corallo" Airport is a strategically located gateway to the main destinations in northern Sardinia.
Only a few areas in the Mediterranean are fortunate enough to offer such a diverse and remarkable combination of natural, historical and archaeological heritage: the north-western part of Sardinia is a true rarity, opening its arms to visitors and offering them an unforgettable experience.
The pristine coastline, with cliffs overlooking the sea where griffon vultures still nest, contrasts with enchanting beaches where the striking colours of the sea can be admired in a range of shades of blue, azure and emerald green.

There are plenty of towns and villages to visit, each with their own unique characteristics:

Alghero, known as “little Barcelona" due to its distinctive historic centre, is an important tourist destination and architectural treasure of the Mediterranean. It offers magnificent coves of fine sand and the imposing promontory of Capo Caccia, located within the Porto Conte Regional Park and the Isola Piana Marine Protected Area, considered one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the entire region, with caves that attract visitors from all over the world every year (the Grotta Verde and the Grotta di Nettuno).
Bosa, built on the mouth of the Temo River, is magnificently nestled on the coast and overlooked by Malaspina Castle.
Sassari is a city rich in history and culture.
Stintino and the stunning, iconic La Pelosa beach, one of the most beautiful in Sardinia.
Porto Torres, the ancient Roman Turris Libisonis, is one of the oldest commercial ports on the island.
The Gulf of Asinara with its famous island, formerly a maximum security prison, now a National Park with a Marine Protected Area.
Castelsardo, one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea, home to the imposing Doria manor house.
